The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test is used by graduate schools as part of their graduate programme admission process. Graduate programmes worldwide require their applicants to submit GRE scores in order to be considered for admission. The GRE is also extremely important for awarding graduate fellowships and graduate research or teaching positions.
The GRE consists of three sections, which are taken in this order:

Analytical Writing (AW)
This section measures written communication skills and the ability to analyse an argument critically.
Consists of: 2 writing tasks:
1.Present Your Perspective on a Issue - 45 mins
2.Analyse an Argument - 30 mins.
Total time: 75 minutes

Quantitative Multiple Choice
This section tests quantitative reasoning skills, mathematical problem-solving skills and data interpretation skills. This is done through 2 distinct question types, but which are intermixed: Problem Solving & Quantitative Comparison.
Consists of: 28 questions
Total time: 45 minutes

Verbal Multiple Choice
This section tests the understanding of written material and the ability to form relationships between the different pieces of information to be analysed. This is done through the following 4 verbal categories:
1.Analogies
2.Antonyms
3.Sentence Completion
4.Reading Comprehension

As well as requiring logic and reasoning skills, the verbal section tests vocabulary, grammar and language skills in general.
Consists of: 30 questions
Total time: 30 minutes
*Bear in mind that you may also be presented with an unscored verbal or quantitative "experimental" section.

Breaks
There is an optional ten-minute break after the Analytical Writing section and a one-minute break between the multiple choice sections.

Scores
The score for the Quantitative and Verbal sections is within a range of 200 to 800.
Each of the 2 essays is graded on a scale of 0-3 (total 6 points).
